Frequently asked questions about a breast check

In addition to the population screening, which only starts at the age of 50, you can take matters into your own hands by having yourself checked annually for abnormalities by means of an ultrasound scan. Our radiologists are happy to answer the most frequently asked questions regarding breast screening.

At what age does mammography usually start?

All women aged 50 to 75 receive an invitation every 2 years for the breast cancer screening program.

At a younger age, an ultrasound is more often chosen. Why?

At a younger age there is still a lot of mammary gland tissue and then mammography does not perform well. The glandular tissue often makes abnormalities invisible. Ultrasound then works very well.

Is an ultrasound scan as reliable as a mammogram? Is this something I should do annually?

Ultrasound is possible under 50 years of age and also completely harmless. Who undergoes an annual ultrasound scan significantly reduces the consequences of breast cancer without any additional disadvantage.

Is the radiation released during a mammogram really that harmful?

It can be harmful, but those who use it wisely and in moderation will benefit more than harm.

How important is self-examination and how often should I do it?

The special self-examination as has been recommended for years appears to have limited value. It causes a lot of unrest and rarely yields anything. It does appear to be important to pay attention to a chance finding, for example when showering. Fortunately, it usually concerns benign breast abnormalities, but always have yourself checked.

For which symptoms is it advisable to go to a specialist for further examination?

Certainly with any lump that remains longer than 14 days further ultrasound examination is necessary. Pain is often less important.

I feel a lump and make an appointment with the specialist. What does the examination (step-by-step plan) look like? Can you tell me more about this?

First an ultrasound scan is important and then if necessary an X-ray (mammography) and then sometimes a puncture/biopsy is necessary. Often there is already a clear picture with the ultrasound scan where the abnormality can be judged as completely harmless and therefore no further investigation is necessary.

Can I have a breast ultrasound without a referral?

Yes, you can also go to the Women's Healthcare Center without a referral on your own initiative. You pay for the examination yourself and it cannot be declared for reimbursement with your insurance.
