Hereditary tumors

Hereditary forms of cancer are often referred to as familial cancer. In a small proportion of patients, hereditary factors can increase the risk of developing cancer. It is important to identify this risk at an early stage. In the Netherlands, there are specific guidelines for identifying hereditary breast cancer and recommendations for preventive screening.

Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention

Attention to breast cancer screening has increased in recent years due to the rising number of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Approximately 18,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, with hereditary predisposition playing a role in 5 to 10 percent of cases.

Thanks to extensive research, the outlook for breast cancer patients has improved significantly. Mammography is the primary imaging method for detecting breast cancer in women aged 30 and older. In our center, we also use ultrasound, particularly for women under 30 with breast symptoms.

In the Netherlands, women aged 50 to 75 are invited for breast cancer screening every two years as part of the national screening program. This supports early detection of breast cancer, which improves treatment outcomes.
