Ultrasound

At Women's Healthcare Center, in addition to mammography, we also perform ultrasound for symptoms or changes in the breast. Ultrasound provides a different type of imaging than mammography and can offer additional information. For women under 30 with breast symptoms or changes, ultrasound is usually the preferred examination.

Men can also visit Women's Healthcare Center for an ultrasound. Click here for more information.

How does ultrasound work?

Using sound waves (ultrasound), the radiologist examines the breast and armpit. During the examination, the radiologist will discuss the findings with you directly. If necessary, the next steps will be discussed with you.

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves that are emitted by a probe and reflected by tissues in the breast. These sound waves are safe, not audible, and do not expose you to radiation, unlike X-rays.

Why ultrasound?

Ultrasound is an effective method for detecting abnormalities in the breast, especially in women under 30. For women over 30, mammography is usually the standard, as it can detect small calcifications that may indicate breast cancer.

The combination of mammography and ultrasound provides the most complete assessment and additional information about breast tissue. Cysts and other abnormalities can often be distinguished during the examination. Ultrasound can also help assess possible leakage of silicone implants.

What can you expect?

At our center, specially trained healthcare professionals perform the examination with care. You can indicate if you experience discomfort during the examination. If you are unable or prefer not to undergo a mammogram, we can discuss alternative imaging options with you.

After the ultrasound examination, the results will be discussed with you by the radiologist. If abnormalities are found, further investigations such as a mammogram or biopsy may be initiated. Where possible, we aim to perform all necessary examinations during a single visit.

Preparation for the examination

Bring the following items to the outpatient clinic:

  • A referral from your GP or a digital confirmation
  • Health insurance card
  • Valid identification
  • Overview of your medications
  • Any other items mentioned in the appointment letter

Most examinations are reimbursed by your health insurer, depending on your policy.
