What is a mammogram?
Mammography is an X-ray examination performed to detect abnormalities in the breast. During this examination, images are taken of the breast tissue, on which abnormalities in the fatty tissue, glandular tissue, and connective tissue can become visible. During the mammography, the breast tissue is compressed as flat as possible to obtain an image that is easy to assess.
We are equipped with the latest tomosynthesis mammograph, which also produces 3D mammography images. This offers a valuable addition to standard mammography, allowing abnormalities to be detected better and faster.
Benefits of Women's Healthcare Center
- Low dose of radiation for optimal patient comfort.
- Less painful examination due to the use of comfortable pads and a short examination time.
- High-quality image with the capability for both 2D and 3D images.
- Rapid diagnostics: mammography, optional ultrasound-guided biopsy, and supplementation with ultrasound within a single consultation.
Preparation for the examination
In preparation for your outpatient clinic visit, it is helpful to think about a few questions and write down your symptoms and questions. Please bring the following items to the outpatient clinic:
- Referral from your GP
- Health insurance card
- Valid identification
- Overview of medicines
- Any other matters mentioned in the appointment letter
Do not use body lotion or talcum powder for the examination to prevent distortion of the photos.
Side effects and risks
Compression of the breast(s) can be painful. Therefore, please schedule your appointment one week after your menstruation, when the breast(s) are least sensitive. Our technicians and radiologists ensure the lowest possible dose of X-rays, thanks in part to our advanced mammograph.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please contact our radiologist before the examination. Sometimes the examination is postponed or an ultrasound is chosen instead.
Costs
If you have been referred by your general practitioner or another specialist, all examinations are reimbursed by your health insurer. If you have not been referred, the costs will be charged.
