Reasons for investigation
Your GP may refer you to Women’s Healthcare Center for various reasons, including benign breast conditions, monitoring of silicone implants, hereditary risk of breast cancer, increased familial risk, follow-up after population screening, or for a second opinion.
Breast complaints and benign conditions
Almost half of all women with breast symptoms have a benign breast condition, often involving lumps that may change during the menstrual cycle or pregnancy. Examples of benign conditions include fibroadenomas, cysts, lipomas, and mastopathy.
Silicone prostheses and breast cancer
Women with silicone implants can visit us for an ultrasound to check for possible complications such as rupture, leakage, or capsular contracture. For women over 30, a mammogram is usually recommended in addition to an ultrasound to rule out breast cancer.
Hereditary predisposition and familial increased risk
A hereditary risk of breast cancer can be identified through genetic testing, especially in women with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer at a young age. Further testing may be recommended if these risk factors are present. Click here for more information about hereditary cancers .
Follow-up processes and second opinion
After population screening, suspicious findings can be followed up with further examination at the Breast Care Center. We also offer the option of a second opinion, which can provide more clarity about possible treatment options.
