Pelvic floor

Pelvic floor complaints are common and can range from problems with urination and bowel movements to pain during intercourse. The pelvic floor consists of muscles and connective tissue surrounding the urethra, vagina, and anus, which regulate pressure in the abdomen. Although many women experience pelvic floor complaints, it is rarely discussed. However, it is important to know that pelvic floor problems are often highly treatable.

What are the symptoms of pelvic floor problems?

Pelvic floor problems manifest in various ways, including:

  • Problems with urination, bowel movements, or pain during intercourse.
  • Prolapse symptoms, in which organs such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum may prolapse.

Prolapse symptoms

In cases of prolapse, organs such as the uterus, bladder, or rectum can descend. These symptoms are common in women after childbirth or after the age of 45. Different types of prolapse have specific symptoms and treatments.

Treatments for prolapse symptoms

  • Therapies: Pelvic physiotherapy, pelvic floor training, and muscle training of the abdomen, back, and legs can reduce the symptoms.
  • Hormonal treatments: Hormone creams or tablets may help strengthen the muscles and connective tissue.
  • Pessary: A pessary can be used to support the prolapse.
  • Surgical interventions: Depending on the severity of the prolapse, surgery may be performed, ranging from abdominal surgery to laparoscopic or vaginal surgery.

Pelvic inflammation

PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) is a common inflammation in women of childbearing age. It is characterized by lower abdominal pain, fever, and changes in vaginal discharge. If left untreated, PID can lead to infertility and ectopic pregnancy.

Treatment for pelvic inflammation

Antibiotics: The use of antibiotics is the most common treatment to combat the infection. In some cases, hospitalization may be necessary, particularly in cases of severe symptoms, pregnancy, or compromised immunity.
