Vaginismus; when sex is not possible

Experiencing so much pain during sex that it simply doesn’t work and is unpleasant: for 5 percent of women, it’s a daily reality. The mere thought of sex makes them – literally and figuratively – lock up.

Contraction of muscles

Women who suffer from vaginismus experience an involuntary strong physical reaction when an object, such as a penis or tampon, comes near the vagina. They literally 'lock up'; all the muscles in the pelvic floor and around the vagina tense and contract. An object cannot enter. When this is attempted, it is painful. In this case, women often speak of a burning sensation.

Causes of vaginismus

  • Physical cause

There is no physical cause of vaginismus. This means that there is no medical diagnosis for the pain experienced with vaginismus. If it even gets to the point where a medical examination can be performed for this; most women do not take the step to a specialist, afraid of the pain during the examination and out of shame. That is a shame, because it makes it unlikely that the diagnosis of 'vaginismus' can be made. Because that is what is happening in most cases when no medical cause for pain during sex can be identified.

  • Psychological cause

Pain during sex without a medical cause often has a psychological cause. An example of this is a traumatic sexual experience from the past. This can have a major impact on the experience of sexual contact.

Characteristic of vaginismus is the strong contraction of the pelvic floor muscles and the muscles around the vagina when attempting to have sexual intercourse. This causes pain. Then, due to fear of the pain, it is difficult to relax, which perpetuates the pain. Vaginismus can thus become a vicious circle of pain and tension.

Treatment of vaginismus

Although there is no medical cause for vaginismus, treatment is possible. In our treatment center specifically for women, we help women deal with vaginismus by focusing on learning to relax the pelvic floor muscles and the muscles around the vagina.

Trauma often plays a role in vaginismus. That is why we refer you to a psychologist, psychiatrist or psychotherapist if necessary to treat you in addition to our treatments aimed at relaxation. We also work with psychologists who guide the patient during conversations. In this way we can search with you for the cause of the pain complaints and treat them in an effective and targeted manner.
