Urology in women
Urology is the medical specialty that deals with abnormalities, conditions and diseases of the bladder, urinary tract or kidneys. Many problems can be treated well. In some cases this means that surgery is necessary, but in many other cases medication or a different lifestyle are the solution.

What is urology?
Urology is a branch of medicine and deals with disorders of the urinary tract in the broadest sense. It embraces a relatively sharply defined part of the human body, but there is overlap with other specialisms. Urology has always occupied a separate place within medicine. Urology has a certain taboo atmosphere. There are people who do not dare to come out about their complaints, but it is important to do so. A urologist examines, treats and provides aftercare.
Complaints of the bladder, ureters or kidneys
In women, the following organs fall under the specialty of urology:
- The kidneys
- The ureters
- The bladder
- The urethra
If you think your complaints are related to one of these organs, a visit to the urologist is recommended.
The complaints
The 3 most common complaints and illnesses are:
- Kidney stones: Vague pain in the lower back that becomes increasingly severe and radiates to the loins and groin, blood in the urine, sweating, nausea and vomiting, the urge to urinate and pain when urinating are all possible consequences of kidney stones.
- Urinary tract problems: A urinary tract infection, weak urine stream, difficulty starting to urinate, dribbling of urine, feeling that the bladder is not empty, more frequent urination, blood or cloudy urine indicate urinary tract dysfunction.
- Urinary incontinence: No bladder control, frequent urge to urinate and sudden (small) urine loss indicate a continence problem.
Some symptoms also occur with other complaints. It does not always mean that your complaint is related to the urinary tract or kidneys. Do you have (long-term) complaints? Then consult your GP and possibly get referred to a urologist.
