Urinary tract infection
A urinary tract infection is one of the most common infections in the human body. It is a collective name for all infections that relate to the urinary tract: kidney, renal calyx, ureter, bladder and ureter. The inside of the urinary tract is covered with a layer of mucous membrane. This layer is inflamed in the event of a urinary tract infection. The infection occurs more often in women than in men because the urethra is shorter.

Causes of urinary tract infection
Often a urinary tract infection is caused by the invasion of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. The biggest culprit of the infection is the intestinal bacterium Escheria Coli. When you have a reduced resistance, do not drink enough, urinate little or do not urinate properly, bacteria have a greater chance of entering. The bacteria can easily enter via the bladder, because there are many bacteria in the pubic area.
Symptoms of urinary tract infection
There are a number of symptoms by which you can recognize a urinary tract infection:
- Frequent urination, usually in small amounts;
- Pain in the lower abdomen, lower back and/or genital area;
- Burning sensation in the urethra when urinating;
- Blood in the urine;
- Urge complaints (even when you are not urinating you feel like you have to urinate);
- Cloudy and different smelling urine.
It is also possible that you have virtually no complaints.
Preventing Urinary Tract Infections
Below are some tips to keep in mind to prevent a urinary tract infection:
- Drink 1.5 to 2 litres per day. At a minimum of 1.5 litres any bacteria that have entered can be urinated out.
- Ensure good bowel movements. The bladder gets more space in the lower abdomen which can ensure that it can empty more easily.
- Eat cranberries or drink cranberry juice.
- Ensure daily hygiene. With water or possibly with a soap with neutral acidity.
- A good toilet posture and hygiene. With a good toilet posture you can ensure that more urine comes out of the bladder. Ensure a relaxed posture.
- Urinate after intercourse.
Treatment
The treatment takes place at home by taking the right antibiotics. After a short time, the complaints will disappear quickly in many cases. Completing the entire course is of great importance, even if the complaints have disappeared earlier.
