Unfulfilled desire to have children

According to the CBS, 20% of adult women are childless, half of whom are involuntary. If you are unable to conceive, this can have a major impact on someone's life. It is wise to investigate why the desire for children remains unfulfilled. In many cases, there are options to increase the chance of parenthood somewhat.

Fertility problems and solutions

The most common way to increase the chances of pregnancy are assisted reproductive technologies, such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Sperm or egg donation are also an option. Some women choose to freeze their eggs to prolong fertility.
Many couples also consider adoption, foster parenting or finding a surrogate mother. It varies per couple which option is most suitable for them. Nowadays, there are more and more choices when it comes to treatments and other options for fertility problems.

Facts about reduced fertility

Couples with normal fertility usually have an 85% chance of becoming pregnant within a year. For about 1 in 12 couples, this takes longer than two years. One of the most important criteria for predicting fertility is the woman's age. Nowadays, many women become pregnant after the age of 30, but the ideal age is actually around 25. After the age of 35, the chance of pregnancy decreases rapidly. For men, it goes more slowly. Fertility decreases only slowly until the age of 40 and then somewhat more rapidly. The number, motility and shape of the sperm cells are important for men.
