A slight swelling in the lower abdomen usually has an innocent cause. It can be related to fluctuations in the hormone balance. For example, just before or during menstruation. It can also be caused by (temporary) intestinal problems. In that case, one mainly experiences a 'bloated feeling'. If all goes well, this feeling will pass within a few days.
Swelling persists
If the swelling persists for a long time and especially if it is accompanied by pain, it is wise to seek medical help. The cause of the swelling is then investigated. It is sometimes difficult to determine the actual cause, because there are several organs in the abdominal cavity.
For example, the swelling could be related to the reproductive organs (uterus and ovaries) or the intestines. In theory, it could even mean that you are pregnant.
Find the cause
Try to rule out causes. Is it possible that you are pregnant? Has something changed in your bowel movements? Have you eaten differently recently or perhaps drunk a lot of alcohol? Do you feel fit or do you suffer from vague complaints? If you ask yourself, this can rule out a few things in the examination.
A swelling in the lower abdomen can also be related to fibroids or an ovarian cyst. Both are basically harmless, but can cause complaints. Sometimes treatment is therefore necessary.
