Familial tumors

In hereditary variants of tumors, we often speak of familial tumors. Heredity can play a role in a small proportion of cancer patients, which can lead to an increased risk of cancer. It is of great importance to discover this risk as early as possible. In the Netherlands, there are specific guidelines for determining familial breast cancer and associated recommendations for preventive screening.

Breast Cancer Research and Prevention

Attention to breast cancer research has increased in recent years due to the growing number of women who are confronted with this form of cancer. Approximately 18,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, with hereditary factors playing a role in 5 to 10 percent of cases.

Thanks to extensive research, the outlook for breast cancer patients has improved significantly. Mammography is the first examination of choice for women aged 30 and over and is an important and effective method to detect breast cancer. In addition to mammography, we also perform ultrasound in our centre, especially for women under 30 with breast complaints.

As part of the population screening, all women in the Netherlands between the ages of 50 and 75 are screened every two years with mammography. This helps with early detection of breast cancer, which is crucial for successful treatment.
