Women's Healthcare Center specializes in women's care. We regularly treat women who have contracted a sexually transmitted disease (STD). There are many different STDs and contracting one can happen to anyone. However, there are many ways to minimize the risk of contracting an STD. Use contraceptives (particularly condoms). Do you think you have contracted an STD? Then seek help and get tested as soon as possible. Sexually transmitted diseases are common and are nothing to be ashamed of. However, it is important that you are treated before the complaint worsens.

What STDs are there?

There are many different STDs and each STD has different characteristics. The severity of the STD also varies. Many STDs are transmitted via mucous membranes or via blood contact. The most common STDs are chlamydia, herpes, genital warts, gonorrhea, HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. There are also STDs that are less common, such as HPV, Shigella, Trichomonas, Scabies and Pubic lice. Fortunately, many STDs can be treated well.

What are the symptoms of an STD?

Each STD has its own symptoms. The symptoms that may indicate that you have an STD are:
  • Blisters, sores, or warts on the penis, vagina, labia, anus, or mouth;
  • Painful urination, a burning sensation when passing urine or pain in the anus, painful defecation;
  • Discharge from the penis, anus or vagina;
  • Vaginal bleeding after intercourse or between periods;
  • Itching of the glans or labia.

Do I have an STD?

If you are afraid that you have an STD, it is important that you get tested and possibly treated. Even if you are in doubt, it is advisable to get tested, because continuing with an STD for too long can have unpleasant consequences. Check whether you have had unprotected sex and discuss the chance of an STD with your partner. Do you have an STD? Then check who you may have infected or vice versa and contact the people involved. They must also get treatment to prevent further spread.
