smear

A smear is a test where cells are taken from the cervix to check for abnormalities in the cervix. All women between the ages of 30 and 60 are invited to have a smear test once every five years. It is possible to have a smear test done at Women's Healthcare Center.

Why a smear test?

Every year, 1,200 (early) cervical cancers are diagnosed thanks to a smear test. Thanks to a smear test, any abnormalities in the cervix can be found. This allows the right treatment to be started in time and the cancer can not develop further. The smear test can detect cervical cancer at an early stage.

Women who have complaints of bleeding after intercourse, bleeding between periods or bloody discharge are advised to have an additional smear. This applies to women of all ages.

How is a smear test done?

Taking a smear takes about ten minutes. It is important that your lower body relaxes well so that the smear can be taken as well as possible. A speculum is placed in the vagina and the cervix can be seen clearly with the help of a light. Then a brush is inserted and rotated, so that mucus is removed from the cervix. The mucus contains cells that are removed for testing. Taking a smear is generally not painful, but it can feel unpleasant.

Treatment after a smear test

In most women, the smear test results are good and no abnormalities are found. If the smear test results are abnormal, the gynaecologist will use a type of microscope to clearly visualise the cervix in order to view the abnormalities. Depending on the abnormality, a suitable treatment will be chosen. For example, the gynaecologist may remove a layer of the cervix. After the abnormal cells in that layer have been removed, new and healthy cells develop in that place. In most women, the smear test returns to normal after treatment and no more abnormalities are found.
