Pap smear for cervical abnormalities

Cervical abnormalities are abnormalities of the cervix. The most well-known abnormality is cervical cancer. In order to detect cervical cancer at an early stage, there is a population study that takes place once every five years for women between the ages of 30 and 60. During this study, a smear is taken, which is then prepared and sent to the laboratory. At the Women's Healthcare Center Amsterdam, the smear is taken by the gynaecologist.

Symptoms of cervical abnormalities

In the early stages of cervical abnormalities, you may have few to no symptoms. The most common symptoms are:

  • Longer and heavier menstrual periods
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge (Pale, watery, pink, brown, bloody and/or smelly)
  • Abnormal bleeding outside of menstruation, e.g. after intercourse

In a more advanced stage, more serious symptoms can occur. This is generally because the tumor or tumour grows to such an extent that it affects surrounding tissue or by metastases. Symptoms of a more advanced stage can include:

  • weight or urine loss.
  • loss of appetite
  • fatigue and general malaise
  • pain in back, pelvis or legs
  • a swollen leg
  • heavy bleeding during and after sex

Treatment of cervical abnormalities

In case of an abnormal result, the gynaecologist will use a type of microscope to visualise the cervix. The abnormalities and/or irregularities will be clearly visible. If necessary, a biopsy will be taken. A small amount of tissue is taken and examined by a pathologist for the presence of abnormal cells.

If abnormal cells are found, the treatment options are discussed, including the recommendation for a lisexcision. During a lisexcision, the gynaecologist removes a layer of the cervix where the abnormal cells were found. After the abnormal cells have been removed, new, healthy cells develop in that spot. The lisexcision is performed under local anaesthesia.
