One in ten women discovers breast cancer during pregnancy

One in ten women who develop breast cancer before their 45th birthday had the first signs of it during their pregnancy.
The Breast Cancer Care Centre in Great Britain surveyed 496 women who had breast cancer before the age of 45. Ten percent of them discovered the first symptoms during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
One in three women had to undergo treatment for breast cancer when their children were under five, The Telegraph reports, citing the research.

The risk of breast cancer increases as a woman gets older: while one in 1,950 women under the age of 29 have the disease, this figure is one in 48 women over the age of 49.

In the Netherlands, over 14,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, according to figures from KWF. Most patients in the Netherlands are between 65 and 69 years old.

The Women's Healthcare Center offers you the opportunity to have breast ultrasound performed as a supplement to self-examination and thus increase the chance of early detection of breast abnormalities.

The examination will be performed by O. Patho or M. Weimann, both radiologists at WHC. The findings will be discussed with you in detail, after which the necessary advice will be given.
