Menstrual disorders

Menstruation is different for every woman. Some people are not bothered by it much, while others like to crawl under a blanket on the couch every month. In some cases, the accompanying symptoms are so severe that we speak of a menstrual disorder. An irregular cycle is also often seen as a disruption of the normal menstrual cycle.

What symptoms indicate a menstrual disorder?

Symptoms that are consistent with a menstrual disorder include abdominal pain and cramps, headache, dizziness, breast pain, nausea, fatigue, a bloated stomach, diarrhea, constipation or a depressed feeling.

The absence of menstruation

Some women have no menstruation for more than three months. This can of course be related to the menopause, but when it happens to women who are not of the age for this, we speak of amenorrhea. This can be caused by, for example, top-level sports/very heavy sports, strong weight fluctuations or stress. If menstruation does not occur for a long time, it is wise to consult a medical specialist.

An irregular cycle

There are women who still menstruate, but have an irregular cycle. For these women, it is not clear how much time there is between each menstruation and how long it lasts. There are two forms: oligomenorrhea or polymenorrhea. With polymenorrhea, the period between two menstruations is too short. With oligomenorrhea, the time between two menstruations is too long than the usual 28 days. Causes can be: heavy exercise, intestinal complaints, an STD, fibroids, endometriosis, an eating disorder, stress or medication use.

Menstrual disorders, what can you do about them?

It is normal for menstruation to cause discomfort. For some, these are more severe than for others. What helps is to place a hot water bottle on the abdomen or lower back, or to massage the lower back lightly. At times when the pain becomes too much, a painkiller can be used. There are special painkillers on the market that help well against menstrual pain.

However, if the complaints are so severe that daily life is affected too much, it is wise to seek the help of a medical specialist.
