Menopause/menopausal symptoms

Sooner or later a woman has to face it: the transition, also called menopause. Women's Healthcare Center Amsterdam specializes in menopausal symptoms. We are happy to help you with your menopausal symptoms.

Menopause is the transition from the fertile period to the end of the fertile period. Menopause can sometimes last up to 10 years and can cause various complaints. For most women, menopause or the transition begins around the age of fifty. Often, menstruation has become more irregular in the years before that. This is because the ovaries produce fewer hormones. Menopause is not a disease or condition, but something that every woman experiences in her life. Some women enter menopause very early, while for some women it starts later.

Menopausal symptoms

During menopause, women can experience physical and mental complaints. The most common complaints are hot flashes, fatigue and heavy perspiration. Menopause often starts with irregular menstruation. In addition to the known complaints, women who are in or have entered menopause can suffer from headaches, dizziness, palpitations and a bloated feeling. The complaints arise because fewer hormones are produced. As a result, the vagina also becomes drier and the skin in the pubic area thinner, some women experience pain during sex as a result.

A woman in menopause produces less estrogen. As a result, incontinence can occur. The skin can also become drier and some women experience hair loss. In addition, (facial) hair often increases.

Mental complaints during menopause

Menopause involves not only physical but also mental symptoms. Such as fatigue, listlessness and mood swings. Some women develop depressive feelings or become forgetful.

Seriousness and expectations

The menopause is a natural process. We cannot call the menopause serious. However, the accompanying symptoms can sometimes be serious. The menopause also affects the brain nuclei, the skin, the bone tissue, the skin, the inner lining of blood vessels, smooth muscle tissue.

The transition usually lasts around four years. However, hot flashes can still occur after that time.

What can you do yourself?

Make sure you are in good shape. A good night's sleep, at least half an hour of exercise per day and eating enough iron-rich food will reduce the chance of discomfort. To be well prepared for hot flashes, you can do the following:
  • Wear clothing that absorbs and evaporates moisture well, such as wool, silk and cotton;
  • Provide a cotton duvet cover and use several wool blankets instead of one synthetic duvet;
  • Alcohol, hot drinks and spicy foods can trigger hot flashes, so avoid them as much as possible;
If you suffer from vaginal dryness and experience pain during sex, for example, discuss this with your partner. You can choose to take extra time during foreplay or to use lubricant.
