Insertion of IUD
Many women in the Netherlands choose the convenience of an IUD when it comes to contraception: a (hormonal) spiral. An IUD offers at least five years of protection against pregnancy and is a very reliable and carefree form of contraception. In addition, a hormonal spiral contains significantly fewer hormones than the pill. The copper spiral is even completely free of hormones, but is considered slightly less safe.

Inserting a coil
At Woman's Health Care Center, the IUD is placed by a specialist. This specialist is more experienced than a general practitioner and can therefore easily respond to any problems during placement.
Places under anesthesia
If desired, the coil can be inserted under local anesthesia. This will make the insertion much less painful. If insertion of a coil was painful in the past, insertion under anesthesia may provide a solution.
How is the IUD inserted?
Once the choice for the coil has been made, the treating specialist will determine whether this method of contraception is suitable for you. Are you still in doubt? You can contact us with all your questions. Sometimes a preliminary examination is necessary, for example to make sure that you do not have an STD. Before the moment of insertion, it is recommended to take a preventive painkiller. It can also help if the coil is inserted during menstruation.
In order to insert the coil, the practitioner first inserts a speculum (duckbill). The coil, which has the shape of an anchor in the uterus, is inserted with the legs inwards via the cervix. Insertion may be accompanied by light bleeding, which may continue for a few days after insertion.
Control
Often a check-up appointment is scheduled some time after placement. During this appointment the treating specialist will discuss with you whether the coil is working and will check whether it is still in the right place. Do you experience problems after placement? Then it is advisable to contact us sooner.
