Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy, or looking into the uterus, is an examination in which the gynaecologist uses a viewing tube (a hysteroscope) to check the cervix and the inside of the uterus for any problems. Using a thin tube with a camera, the gynaecologist can map out on a screen whether any abnormalities can be seen. Minor procedures can be performed during this examination. These include removing a (small) polyp, removing an IUD where the strings are no longer visible or taking a biopsy.

Reasons for a hysteroscopy

  • Severe and persistent menstrual pain
  • Abnormal bleeding during or between menstrual periods
  • Absence of menstruation after curettage
  • Repeated premature births or miscarriages
  • Abnormal ultrasound findings

When will you have the hysteroscopy?

Preferably, the hysteroscopy is performed outside the menstrual period . If one of the reasons is abnormal blood loss, this will not make the examination completely reliable during the menstrual period, as blood loss occurs then. If you are using the contraceptive pill, the examination can be performed, provided that you take the pill every day.

If the pill is not used, the first half of the cycle, before ovulation, is a good time to have the test done. If you want to become pregnant, it is very important to have the test done before ovulation because there is no fertilized egg that could possibly implant.

Hysteroscopy examination procedure

At the outpatient clinic, you will first be given painkillers in advance, and sometimes also a local anesthetic. You will sit on the chair where you will sit with your legs in the leg rests. The gynaecologist will insert the hysteroscope through the uterine cavity. The gynaecologist will insert fluid into the uterine cavity through the hysteroscope. This will make the uterine wall from the front and back clearly visible.

The examination takes about 15 minutes. If minor interventions are performed during the examination, it may take longer.
