The importance of breast examination

Breast examinations are important to perform regularly. During a breast examination, women can check for lumps, strings or suspicious spots in or on their breasts. In addition, it is possible to perform a mammogram or ultrasound at Women's Health Care Amsterdam.

Breast cancer is a disease that affects many women, especially after the age of thirty. It is important to detect breast cancer as early as possible, then there are still many treatment options. You can perform a breast examination yourself and at home, but as soon as you notice something suspicious it is important to have the breast(s) thoroughly examined.

How does a breast examination work?

In addition to performing a breast examination yourself, mammography is an effective way to detect breast cancer. During a mammogram, an X-ray is taken of the breast. The image shows any abnormalities in the breast.

Another way to perform breast examination is by ultrasound. This is done when a lump, cord or other palpable or visible abnormality is discovered in the breast. An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of the breast tissue.

Self breast examination

Performing a breast examination yourself involves several steps. It starts with a visual check: examine your breasts carefully. Are there any changes or is there anything noticeable? Check the nipple and the area around it both standing and lying down. The nipple should yield smoothly when you gently pull the nipple forward a little. Then make circular movements with light pressure on your fingers. Don't forget to move from top to bottom in addition to circular movements. Finish with a wedge-shaped movement: examine the breast with movements from the nipple outwards. Repeat the movements and apply different pressure each time. Do you discover an odd spot, lump, cord or other abnormality? Then contact us immediately for further examination.
