Uterine fibroids

A fibroid, also known as a uterine myoma, is a benign tumor that develops in the uterine wall. These tumors can be located in the uterine wall or within the muscular tissue, the term uterus myomatosus is used when multiple fibroids are present in the muscle tissue

At Women's Healthcare Center Amsterdam, we specialize in women's healthcare and can determine, based on symptoms and examination, whether fibroids are the cause of your symptoms.

Causes of Uterine Fibroids (Uterine Myomatosis)

The growth of fibroids is stimulated by the female hormone estrogen, especially during the reproductive years. Although fibroids are usually benign, there is a very small risk of a malignant transformation.

Uterine fibroids are sometimes difficult to detect because they do not always cause symptoms or cannot be felt during examination. Pain typically occurs when a fibroid is located in a less favorable position. Menstruation can also become heavier due to the presence of fibroids.

Uterine fibroids are relatively common in women, with black women generally having a higher chance.

Different types of uterine fibroids

Fibroids can occur in four types, depending on their location in the uterus. Each type of fibroid can cause different symptoms:

  • Intraligamentous fibroid: located in the ligaments supporting the uterus
  • Subserosal fibroid: located on the outside of the uterus.
  • Intramural fibroid: located in the wall of the uterus.
  • Submucosal fibroid: located beneath the uterine lining.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids (Uterine Myomatosis)

Many women have undetected fibroids and remain symptom-free.

Women who do experience symptoms due to uterine fibroids may suffer from:

  • Pressure of pain in the lower abdomen.
  • Pressure on the bladder and increased urge to urinate.
  • Back pain radiating form the lower abdomen.
  • Pain during sexual intercourse.
  • Severe menstrual pain.
  • Irregular bleeding during menstruation.
  • Vaginal discharge.
  • Difficulty getting pregnant.

Treatment of uterine fibroids

If you suspect you have fibroids or are experiencing symptoms suggestive of fibroids, please contact WHC Amsterdam for an accurate diagnosis. We use ultrasound to detect abnormalities in and around the uterus. If necessary, we perform a vaginal examination to check for irregularities.

Often, an ultrasound or vaginal examination is sufficient to diagnose fibroids. If symptoms persist, further investigation may be necessary. Treatment options for uterine fibroids include medication, minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery to remove the fibroid, or embolization of the blood vessels supplying the fibroid to shrink the tissue.
