Hereditary tumors

Hereditary variants of tumors are often referred to as familial tumors. Heredity can play a role in a small proportion of cancer patients, which may entail an increased risk of cancer. It is of great importance to detect this risk as early as possible. In the Netherlands, there are specific guidelines for diagnosing familial breast cancer and associated recommendations for preventive screening.

Breast Cancer Screening and Prevention

Attention to breast cancer screening has increased in recent years due to the growing number of women affected by this form of cancer. Approximately 18,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, with hereditary predisposition playing a role in 5 to 10 percent of cases.

Thanks to extensive research, the outlook for breast cancer patients has improved significantly. Mammography is the first examination of choice for women aged 30 and older and is an important and effective method for detecting breast cancer. In our center, in addition to mammography, we also perform ultrasound, particularly for women under 30 with breast complaints.

As part of the population screening program, all women in the Netherlands aged 50 to 75 are screened every two years using mammography. This helps with the early detection of breast cancer, which is crucial for successful treatment.
