The first symptoms of pregnancy

Pregnancy brings with it many changes. Often these changes are noticeable at a very early stage. But which things can indicate pregnancy and which cannot? Anyone suddenly experiencing any of the symptoms below would do well to consult their doctor. With pregnancy, major hormonal changes take place, which can cause many different symptoms. Is there a real chance of pregnancy and are there noticeable changes? If so, take a pregnancy test.

Nausea

Nausea at the beginning of a pregnancy is caused by the hormonal changes in the body. It usually begins around the expected menstrual period and sometimes a few days earlier. The nausea is worst in the morning but can also flare up throughout the day. The nausea occurs because digestion slows down, this is due to the production of progesterone. Food does not digest as quickly and therefore and the feeling of being full lingers longer.

Sensitive breasts

One to two weeks after conception, the breasts may become sensitive. This is due to the production of the hormones progesterone and estrogen. This causes the glands in the breasts to swell, the breasts may feel heavier and be more sensitive to touch. Sometimes the feeling is described as downright painful. It is then a good idea to check with the doctor or midwife.

Fatigue

During the first two weeks, many women feel very tired. This is due to the rise in the amount of progesterone in your body. Progesterone helps your body and uterus prepare for pregnancy. This requires a lot of energy. Feeling weak, tired and lethargic can accompany this.

No menstruation

Often menstrual bleeding stays away when pregnancy is present. Nevertheless, light bleeding can still occur around the time of menstruation, and even during pregnancy this is possible. Especially if there was always a regular menstrual cycle, this is immediately noticeable. So there is no immediate need to worry if light bleeding occurs, but it is always a good idea to consult a specialist.

Pain in the lower abdomen

The uterus is attached to the pelvis with ligaments and tendons. When pregnancy occurs, the uterus grows larger. This causes the ligaments to stretch. This can cause stabbing in the lower abdomen, a very unpleasant feeling. Stretching of the ligaments begins early in pregnancy.

Getting pregnant while on the pill

It can happen that a woman gets pregnant while using the birth control pill. The chance is between 0.2% and 10%. Of course, that 10% sounds like a lot, this is mainly because many women use the pill incorrectly or inaccurately. The pill becomes less reliable by, for example:

  • Influence of other medications
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Starting a new pill strip too late after menstruation
  • Forgetting a pill
