Lower abdominal swelling

A slight swelling in the lower abdomen usually has a harmless cause. It may be related to fluctuations in hormones. For example, just before or during menstruation. It also happens that (temporary) intestinal problems are the cause. You may experience a 'bloated feeling'. If all goes well, this feeling will pass within a few days.

Swelling persists

If the swelling persists for a long time and especially if it is accompanied by pain, it is wise to seek medical attention. The cause of the swelling will then be examined. It is sometimes difficult to determine the true cause, as there are several organs in the abdominal cavity. For example, the swelling may be related to the reproductive organs (uterus and ovaries) or the intestines. In theory, it could even mean that you are pregnant.

Rule out causes

Try to rule out causes. Is it possible that you are pregnant? Has anything changed in your stool pattern? Have you been eating differently recently or perhaps drinking a lot of alcohol? Do you feel otherwise fit or are you suffering from vague symptoms? If you check yourself, the examination can rule out some things.

Swelling in the lower abdomen can also be related to fibroids or an ovarian cyst. Both are harmless in principle, but can cause symptoms. Sometimes treatment is therefore necessary.
